Hangar Expansion in La Ronge to Improve Aerial Firefighting Capacity

The province is trying to be more prepared when it comes to fighting forest fires in northern Saskatchewan.

Environment Minister Dustin Duncan was at the La Ronge Airport on Thursday to celebrate the completion of a four-year, $14 million expansion of Wildfire Management’s Aviation Operations hangar.

With the addition of more than 30 feet of space, the expanded hangar is about 40 per cent larger and includes a resurfaced floor, an office and training centre. It will also feature new equipment such as an overhead crane, full-foam sprinkler system and a 60,000-gallon water tank for fire suppression and domestic water use. The project also includes new bottom-roller hangar doors and upgrades to the hangar and tanker base aprons.

On Thursday, the Saskatchewan government unveiled renovations made to the hangar facility in La Ronge.

The hanger is about 40 per cent bigger, has a resurfaced floor and revamped training centre, according to a media release sent by the provincial government.
