National emergency laws but no sovereign aerial firefighting fleet

State governments will be left to decide how to fill the gaps in aerial waterbombing capacity after the federal government did not endorse a key recommendation from the bushfire royal commission to create its own fleet.

The federal government adopted other recommendations from the Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements’ final report, including giving itself powers to establish a national state of emergency. The Australian Defence Force will also have an expanded role focused on natural disaster recovery.
