The Mescal Fire consumed more than 52,800 acres by Monday morning, growing in size by 14,000 acres since Sunday, according to fire officials and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality.

The giant wildfire burned on the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation near Globe and was only 8% contained as of Monday, according to InciWeb, a wildfire tracking website operated by the U.S. Forest Service.

Crews were working to prevent the fire from reaching U.S. 70. The fire will remain very visible at night as it moves down the north side of Hog Mountain, according to the Mescal Fire Information page.

As of Monday, aerial prescribed burns on the fire continued to prevent a high severity fire as two fires in separate divisions merge together, Marcus Cornwell, Mescal Fire operations section chief, said in a video update.
