Tanker 95 Helps Reno County Fire in Kansas Reach 90% Containment

Fire Crews are still working to keep a Reno County fire from sparking up after it burned nearly 80 acres. According to Hutchinson Fire Chief Steven Beer at around 1:41 p.m. Tuesday, the Hutchinson Fire Department responded to a 50-80 acre brush fire located between 4th and 30th from Buhler Road to Willison Road.

The wind and dry conditions caused the fire to spread quickly for about two miles.

In order to contain the fire, 100 firefighters from five different counties were on scene. “Task forces from Reno County, Rice County, Sedgwick Count and McPherson County came to assist in this fire fight today,” said Chief Beer. Residents in the surrounding areas were asked to voluntarily evacuate their homes as a precaution, though no homes were destroyed in the fire.

Tanker 95, which the Kansas Forest Service stores at the Hutchinson Airport was used to help fight the fire.

“…an airplane based in Hutchinson doing numerous air drops along the lines, that was very successful for us,” says Chief Beer.

However, Chief Beer said the terrain surrounding the fire worked against crews, “cedars and plum thickets…in north Hutchison there is a lot of sand dunes with a lot of soft sands. We had a lot of fire trucks get stuck out there today.”
