In an unusual sighting, Cal Fire brought a C-130 air tanker to the Ramona Airport for training flights on Feb. 3.
Officials expect several of the C-130s to eventually be transferred to Cal Fire for use in fighting fires, with at least one being permanently placed at the Ramona Airport. The larger planes have an advantage of being able to deliver more fire retardant when needed.
Cal Fire Capt. Shane Montgomery said the additional planes would extend Cal Fire’s current fleet. But he said they don’t yet know the total number of C-130 tankers Cal Fire will receive, as negotiations are ongoing.
Of the current Cal Fire fleet of 23 S-2T’s, two are kept at the Ramona Airport. Cal Fire can also borrow a Forest Service H-538 helicopter kept there.
