Weaverville Airport Accommodating Firefighting Helicopters

Lonnie Pool Field Airport in Weaverville was closed to public use on Aug. 10 after the U.S. Forest Service requested Trinity Transportation close the airport so they could keep their helicopters there, along with many other supplies to fight the Six River Lightning Complex fire.

Panos Kokkas, Trinity Transportation director, said the Forest Service contacted him, asking if Weaverville’s airport could be closed for a week to hold their helicopters, a trailer, gasoline and restrooms, alongside all the workers at the airport fighting the nearby fires. As of Aug. 17, Kokkas said they asked to reserve the airport until Aug. 24, although if the Forest Service will extend its stay longer is still unknown.
