FireWatch: Drones Add Precision to Rum Creek Fire’s Aerial Fire Attack

MERLIN, Ore. — Firefighters working on the Rum Creek Fire are using drones to their advantage to fight the fire today.  Controlled burns are an old firefighting tactic.  Using drones to start them is a new tech tool.

When strategic firing operations are used to control fuel burning before a wildfire burns it uncontrolled, those burns help secure a wildfire perimeter. Firefighters use drones and/or unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) as a burnout tool by dropping plastic sphere dispensers (PSD) that start fires in desired locations to stop the advancing wildfire.
