Aerial Firefighters – Fighting Wildfires From the Sky

We’re midway through the Western Cape’s wildfire season, which generally starts around November and ends in May with fire and rescue services responding to more than 15,000 fires per season.

Aerial firefighting forms a crucial part of the fire and rescue service in putting out wildfires, especially with areas and heights that are too dangerous for firefighters to reach head-on.

The UH-1H (Huey) Helicopter is used for fast attacks on wildfires in the Western Cape – the helicopter has a 1,000 litre capacity to transport water to the fire line and has been modified to enhance its strength and safety for the rigours of repetitive lifting.
