For weeks before the evacuation order came, Alex Deslauriers and his family had watched the Downton Lake wildfire burn through the rugged forest across the waters of Gun Lake, an hour north of Pemberton.
It was 2023, the worst fire season in B.C. history.
“We watched the aircraft dousing the fire during the day. During the nighttime hours, when no fire suppression was being done, the fire moved closer and closer to the community”, said Deslauriers.
