CalFire is doing what they can to keep Nevada County and surrounding areas safe during what they are now calling a 12-month fire season.
CalFire, along with newly appointed Director of Office of Emergency Services Director Alex Keeble-Toll presented to the Nevada County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday for an update on the status of the fire agency’s handle on things as fire concerns continue.
“Fire season is a word that is a little passe, believe it or not,” said Brian Estes, Fire Chief with CalFire. “When I started in this career 35 years ago our traditional fire season was three months or so and we saw a pre-planned spring and a mild fall and very substantial winters. We just saw that three month period where things were just very concerning. We’ve seen that paradigm change.”
Estes said that his department’s response has been “robust” in preparing staffing, and looking toward the future of staffing to a 12-month-a-year fire season, which is a realistic future at which Nevada County is looking.
