Dan Carroll with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources in Park Rapids opened the Headwaters Center for Lifelong Learning spring season with a presentation about fighting wildfires from the air.
A Park Rapids native, Carroll describes himself as a Firewise specialist – a designation related to educating residents about wildfire – and an air tactical group supervisor, also known as air attack.
At the HCLL program on March 3, he explained air attack as a sort of airborne air traffic controller, coordinating the movements of firefighters on the ground and other aircraft from a high-altitude orbit above a wildland fire.
