Storm warnings across south-east Queensland have been cancelled after heavy rain, strong wind and large hail were tipped to quell heatwave conditions on Tuesday afternoon.
The expected wet weather, which delivered only minor falls for the region, came as firefighters called in aerial support for a second day to stop a bushfire burning in remote Fraser Island bushland.
The Bureau of Meteorology monitored a number of severe storms throughout the afternoon after senior meteorologist Jonty Hall warned about the potential for large hail and wind gusts with capacity to “do some damage to property and trees”.
But residents were largely spared, with only small hail reported on the Gold Coast and Rosewood. Apart from isolated totals of about 30 millimetres at Mapleton and Baroon Pocket Dam in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, rain remained below 20 millimetres.
