WATFORD CITY, N.D. (KFYR) – Near Watford City, firefighting efforts have taken to the air. Blackhawk helicopters have been dumping water on the fires since Sunday.
The McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office says that fire has burned roughly 22,400 acres and is about 20% contained. Two North Dakota National Guard U-H-60 Blackhawk helicopters have been providing aerial support and more than two dozen National Guard firefighters have been deployed. At least one airplane has been dropping fire retardant, hoping to create a barrier that will protect homes in the area.
